Terms of Service
Last updated: May 1, 2026
These Terms govern your access to and use of AlertNaija (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
1. The Service is not a substitute for emergency services
AlertNaija is a community safety platform. It is not, and does not replace, official emergency services. In a life-threatening emergency, always also call your local emergency number (112 in Nigeria). We make no guarantee that any specific response will occur within any specific time, or at all.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 13 years old to use the Service. By registering, you confirm you meet this requirement and that the information you provide is accurate.
3. Your account
- You're responsible for keeping your credentials and PIN secure.
- You're responsible for all activity under your account.
- Notify us immediately at safety@alertnaija.com if you suspect your account is compromised.
- You can delete your account at any time. See /delete-account.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- File false reports, hoaxes, or malicious accusations. Posting deliberately false information through the Service may also constitute an offence under Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and we may report serious cases to law enforcement.
- Misuse the panic button, missing-person flow, or other safety features for non-safety purposes.
- Upload content that is illegal, hateful, defamatory, sexually explicit, or that violates someone else's rights.
- Upload images of children in harmful, exploitative, or sexualised contexts. Such content is reported to law enforcement immediately.
- Harass, threaten, dox, or impersonate others.
- Use the Service to evade or interfere with law enforcement.
- Scrape, copy, or reverse-engineer the Service except as permitted by law.
- Resell or commercially exploit the Service without our written permission.
We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules. Severe violations may be reported to authorities.
5. User content
You keep ownership of the content you submit. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, display, and distribute your submissions strictly for the purpose of operating the Service (including showing reports in community feeds and routing alerts). You are responsible for the accuracy and legality of what you post.
We screen uploads with automated moderation and may remove content that violates these Terms or applicable Nigerian law, including under our content-takedown procedure at /legal/takedown.
6. Intermediary status (Cybercrimes Act §38)
AlertNaija acts as an "intermediary" with respect to user-generated content. We do not pre-moderate every report. We respond to lawful removal requests, court orders, and government requests through our published procedures. We cooperate in good faith with valid law enforcement requests under Nigerian law.
7. Verified responders and partners
Some responders, security providers, and merchants on the Service are third parties. We screen partners and provide rating and dispute mechanisms, but we do not employ them and we do not guarantee their services. Your engagement with a partner is between you and them.
8. Privacy
Our handling of your information is governed by our Privacy Policy, which is incorporated into these Terms by reference.
9. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy of reports, or uninterrupted availability.
10. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, AlertNaija and its directors, employees, and contractors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.
11. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless AlertNaija, its officers, directors, employees, and contractors from any claim or demand made by a third party due to your violation of these Terms, your content, or your unlawful use of the Service.
12. Termination
You may delete your account at any time from in-app Settings. We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or pose a risk to other users. Some provisions (Acceptable Use, Disclaimers, Limitation of Liability, Indemnification) survive termination.
13. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Disputes will be resolved in the competent courts of Nigeria.
14. Changes
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced in-app before they take effect. Continued use after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
