Delete your account

Last updated: May 1, 2026

You can permanently delete your AlertNaija account at any time, from inside the app or by contacting us. This page explains both options and what happens to your data when you delete.

Option 1 — Delete from inside the app (fastest)

  • Open the AlertNaija app and sign in.
  • Tap Settings (gear icon, bottom nav).
  • Tap Profile.
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap Delete account.
  • Confirm. Your account is deleted immediately and you are signed out.

Option 2 — Request deletion by email

If you can no longer access the app, email privacy@alertnaija.com from the email address on your account, with the subject "Delete my account". Include the phone number associated with the account so we can verify ownership. We process all email-based requests within 30 days of receiving them, in line with the Nigerian Data Protection Act.

What gets deleted

  • Your account credentials — Cognito record removed; you can no longer sign in.
  • Your profile — name, phone, email, date of birth, address, state/LGA, PIN, language and notification preferences, family-circle relationships.
  • Your push notification tokens — you stop receiving any AlertNaija notifications.
  • Your private data — saved locations, Check-on-Me schedules, garage entries, device registry entries you created, in-app messages between you and other users, and emergency contact lists you added.
  • Your draft incident reports not yet posted publicly.

What is retained, and why

A small amount of data is retained after account deletion for legal, safety, and platform-integrity reasons. Where retained, it is de-identified (your name, phone, and email are removed):

  • Public incident and missing-person reports — Once a report has been visible to the community, it remains in the public feed but is no longer linked to your name or contact info. This is essential for the safety value of the platform: removing past reports retroactively would erase community knowledge of real events.
  • Audit trails for sensitive actions you took (device registry edits, vehicle registry edits, partner ratings and disputes). These are required by Nigerian consumer-protection norms and our own anti-fraud policies. Your name is removed; the action timeline is kept.
  • Aggregated, anonymised analytics — counts, regional breakdowns, response times. Cannot be linked back to you.
  • Records we are legally required to keep — for example, records subject to a valid law-enforcement preservation order. We retain these only as long as required by law.

Things that happen automatically when you delete

  • Your family-circle members are notified that you have removed yourself.
  • Active Check-on-Me schedules are cancelled (no missed-checkin alerts will fire).
  • Any partner requests in flight are marked closed.
  • Pending nurse bookings you created are cancelled.

This is irreversible

Once an account is deleted, we cannot restore it. If you want to use AlertNaija again later, you'll need to register a new account. Past public reports remain visible (de-identified) but cannot be re-linked to a new account.
