The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has uncovered an illegal arms manufacturing factory at Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area of the state. This was made known by the state police commissioner, Alhaji Umar Gwadabe, at a news conference on Wednesday in Uyo.

He said his men burst into the factory which, according to him, has been operating for almost 30 years.

“We had a tip off and our men went to the location at Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area. That was how we were able to uncover the factory. Investigation is still going on, and by the time this is completed, we will address the press accordingly,” the state police commissioner claimed.

He said items including gun-making machines and some ammunition were discovered, but the number of people arrested will not be made public for now.

The commissioner called for improved working relationship with stakeholders and the general public, and assured residents of the state of a peaceful Yuletide season.

“Arrangements are already in place to protect lives and property this season, especially as the state is playing host to numerous religious and cultural events,” he said.

He urged parents to caution their children against the use of knockouts, explaining, “People should not risk their lives, and they should also not try to infringe on other people’s rights.”
